Setting Up Your Computer

In order for WebCT to function properly, you'll need to spend a few minutes setting up your computer:

1. Use a Recommended Browser

2. Enable Java

3. Set Your Browser Cache to Always Reload a Page

4. Disable Popup Killers

5. Enable Cookies

2. Enable Java

In order for certain features in WebCT to work properly (including email, discussions, and quizzes), you must allow your browser to read Java.

If you do not see a scrolling message above, but just a grey bar you need to enable java in your browser
Rest your mouse over the browser version you are using to see instructions for enabling Java


  • Select Tools
  • Select Internet Options
  • Select the Advanced tab
  • Scroll down then make sure the 'Use Java 2 v. 1.2' box is checked
  • Click OK (you will have to restart the computer for this change to take effect)

 


  • Select Edit
  • Select Preferences
  • Select Advanced
  • Make sure the 'Enable Java' and 'Enable native object scripting' boxes are checked
  • Click OK


  • Select Edit Preferences
  • Select Preferences
  • Select advanced
  • make sure the 'Enable Java' box is checked
  • Click OK


  • Select Tools
  • Select Options
  • Select Web Features
  • make sure the 'Enable Java' box is checked
  • Click OK

  • If you do not have the Sun Java plug-in, click the button to go to their site

    3. Set Your Browser Cache to Always Reload a Page

    Most web browsers store copies of the web pages you view on your computer's hard drive.   When you go back to see the same page again, the browser looks up the page on your hard drive instead of the web.  That saves time, but means that if the page has changed, you don't see the changes.

    Because you will be constantly changing web pages while working with Moodle, you will want to set your browser to constantly check the web to update the pages you view.
    Rest your mouse over the browser version you are using to see instructions for setting your cache settings


    • Select Tools then choose Internet Options
    • Select the General tab
    • Select Settings from Temporary Internet Files
    • Select the Every Visit to the Page radio button
    • Click OK

     


    • Select Edit
    • Select Preferences
    • Click the + sign next to Advanced to see more options
    • Select Cache
    • Select the Every Time I view the page radio button
    • Click OK

    • Select Edit
    • Select Preferences
    • Click the + sign next to Advanced to see more options
    • Select Cache
    • Select the Every Time I view the page radio button
    • Click OK

  • Firefox does this automatically

    4. Disable Pop-Up Blockers

        Rest your mouse over the browser version you are using to see instructions for allowing popups


    • Select Tools then choose Pop-up blocker
    • Select Pop-up blocker Settings
    • In the box labeled 'Address of Web site to allow' type www.lamarcc.net
    • Click Add
    • Click Close

     


    • Select Edit
    • Select Preferences
    • Click the + sign next to Privacy and Security to see more options
    • Select Popup Windows
    • Select the Allowed Sites button
    • Type: www.lamarcc.net in the box
    • Click Add
    • Click OK

    • Select Edit
    • Select Preferences
    • Click the + sign next to Privacy and Security to see more options
    • Select Popup Windows
    • Select the Allowed Sites button
    • Type: www.lamarcc.net in the box
    • Click Add
    • Click OK

    • Select tools
    • Select Options
    • Select Web Features
    • Click the Allowed Sites button next to Block Popup Windows
    • In the box labeled Address of Web Site, type www.lamarcc.net
    • Click Allow
    • Click OK

    If you are using one of the third party pop-up blocker listed below, you will need to either disable it or include the address of the server (www.lamarcc.net) as a valid site.

    6. Enable Cookies

    Rest your mouse over the browser version you are using to see instructions for allowing popups


    • Select Tools then choose Internet Options
    • Click the Privacy Tab
    • Click Sites
    • In the box labeled 'Address of Web' type www.lamarcc.net
    • Click Allow
    • Click OK
    • Click OK

     


    • Select Tools
    • Select Cookie Manager
    • Select Manage Stored Cookies
    • Click the Cookie Sites Tab
    • Type: www.lamarcc.net in the box
    • Click Allow
    • Click Close

    • Select Tools
    • Select Cookie Manager
    • Select Manage Stored Cookies
    • Click the Cookie Sites Tab
    • Type: www.lamarcc.net in the box
    • Click Allow
    • Click Close

    • Select tools
    • Select Options
    • Select Privacy
    • Click the + in front of Cookies to see more options
    • Type www.lamarcc.net in the box
    • Click Allow
    • Click OK
    • Click OK
